SSB Established in 1963 for Border Security and Crime Prevention

DEFENSE

The Special Service Bureau (SSB) was established on 15 March 1963 following the Sino-Indian Conflict of 1962. Its motto is 'Service, Security, Brotherhood'. The SSB is tasked with preventing trans-border crimes such as smuggling, human trafficking, and illegal migration, as well as conducting disaster relief operations.

It operates under the Criminal Procedure Code of 1973, the Arms Act of 1959, the NDPS Act of 1985, and the Passport Act of 1967, with plans for additional powers under the Customs Act of 1962. The SSB's jurisdiction extends within a 15 km belt along the Indo-Nepal and Indo-Bhutan borders in several Indian states, including Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh.

The organization is led by a Director General and comprises infantry-style battalions, specialized units, and training centers. The SSB received the President's Colours in 2004 for its contributions to national security and border management.
