St. John Parish Secures $67 Million Federal Grant for Critical Minerals Facility
A federal grant of approximately $67 million will support ElementUSA's $850 million critical minerals processing facility in St. John the Baptist Parish. The initiative aims to extract essential minerals from bauxite residue, with construction projected to commence in mid-2027 and operations by Q3 2028.

ElementUSA's proposed facility in St. John the Baptist Parish will receive nearly $67 million from the U.S. Department of Energy to enhance domestic production of critical minerals, including gallium and scandium.
This investment is part of an $850 million project utilizing over 30 million tons of bauxite residue, with construction set to begin in mid-2027 and operations anticipated in Q3 2028. The project has already garnered nearly $30 million from the U.S.
Department of Defense and is projected to create 754 jobs. It aims to mitigate industrial waste and strengthen supply chains for technologies in electronics and renewable energy, reducing reliance on foreign sources like China.
