Startups Advance Clean Hydrogen Production Underground with Electrical Stimulation
Companies are pioneering underground clean hydrogen generation by using electrical stimulation to fracture rocks. This innovative method aims to overcome previous economic barriers and tap into natural geologic hydrogen resources.

Eden GeoPower and other startups are utilizing electrical reservoir stimulation to fracture subterranean rocks for clean hydrogen production. This approach involves injecting water into iron-rich formations, where high-voltage pulses induce chemical reactions that yield hydrogen gas.
In 2024, ARPA-E allocated $20 million to support underground hydrogen research, with Eden securing $900,000 for its project. Although initial tests have shown promising results, challenges remain in scaling the technology and addressing issues such as gas purification and regulatory frameworks. The outcome of upcoming field trials will determine the viability of electrical stimulation versus other methods in the hydrogen economy.
