STE-Holdings Proposes I-70 Mountain Express Hydrogen-Powered Rail Project in Colorado
STE-Holdings has proposed the I-70 Mountain Express, a $12 billion hydrogen-powered railway project in Colorado designed to connect Grand County with the Front Range, alleviate highway congestion, and promote affordable housing. The initiative plans to span over 100 miles with 28 stations, projecting nearly 13 million annual riders, and will fund itself through solar energy revenue from participating homeowners. The project faces challenges including land rights, political approval, and homeowner involvement for solar energy.

Denver-based STE-Holdings has proposed the I-70 Mountain Express, a hydrogen-powered railway project intended to connect Grand County with the Front Range. The initiative aims to reduce highway congestion, promote affordable housing, and generate solar energy.
The project, estimated to cost $12 billion, will not use taxpayer funding but instead rely on solar energy revenue from homeowners agreeing to host solar panels. The railway would span over 100 miles with 28 stations, projecting annual ridership of nearly 13 million.
The proposal includes six phases, starting with a line from Golden to Blackhawk, eventually reaching Winter Park. Plans for 5,000 new housing units near stations include provisions for low-income residents.
Challenges include securing land rights, political approval, and homeowner participation for solar energy. The project aims to create a hydrogen-based economy and alleviate workforce housing shortages in Grand County.
