Österreichische Post, EVN, and Netz Niederösterreich Test Bidirectional Charging for Electric Vehicles in Austria
Österreichische Post AG, EVN, and Netz Niederösterreich are conducting a pilot project in Mautern an der Donau to test bidirectional charging of electric vehicles (V2G). Five Maxus electric vehicles will charge and discharge electricity to the public grid, utilizing solar energy stored in vehicle batteries. The project aims to pave the way for future standards in Austria’s energy grid, with expectations for bidirectional charging to be feasible by early 2027.

Österreichische Post AG, EVN, and Netz Niederösterreich are testing bidirectional charging (V2G) in Mautern an der Donau, using five Maxus electric vehicles. These vehicles will charge at ZAPe wallboxes and can also return electricity to the grid.
The project utilizes solar energy stored in vehicles during idle times, acting as a large electricity storage system. As Austria's largest e-fleet operator, Swiss Post is equipped to implement intelligent charging strategies. Bidirectional charging is projected to be possible in Austria from early 2027, offering grid relief and optimizing photovoltaic energy use.
