Sudan’s Government Returns to Khartoum After Nearly Three Years in Port Sudan

DEFENSE

Sudan's Prime Minister Kamil Idris announced the government's return to Khartoum from Port Sudan after operating there for nearly three years due to the civil war. The army recaptured Khartoum last March, allowing for a gradual return.

As of October, 1.2 million people returned to Khartoum, facing destroyed infrastructure and services. The war has killed tens of thousands, and rebuilding the capital is estimated to cost $350 million.

Concurrently, RSF drone strikes resulted in at least 32 deaths in central and southern Sudan. Sudan's economy is in crisis, with the finance minister stating all sources of revenue have been lost due to the conflict.

The government is seeking investment for infrastructure and has allocated a significant budget for military operations against the RSF, who control much of the Darfur region. International diplomatic efforts continue to resolve the ongoing conflict.
