SWARM Biotactics Develops Madagascar Cockroaches for Surveillance and Rescue Operations

SWARM Biotactics, a German startup, is developing Madagascar hissing cockroaches equipped with tiny backpacks for surveillance and search-and-rescue missions. The cockroaches can carry payloads up to 15 grams, with plans to reduce this to 10 grams.

Their resilience allows them to navigate hazardous environments undetected. SWARM's team attaches electrodes to the roaches' antennae to control their movement, with the aim of directing swarms autonomously towards targets.

The company is currently collaborating with Germany's Bundeswehr to test these capabilities, focusing on defense and reconnaissance without plans for explosive usage. Potential deployments of cockroach swarms are expected within 18-24 months.
