Sweden's Air Force Commander Discusses Gripen Fighter Jet Modernization and NATO Cooperation

DEFENSE

Maj. Gen. Jonas Wikman, commander of the Swedish Air Force since December 2022, is overseeing a modernization program aimed at enhancing combat capabilities alongside Sweden's NATO membership.

The Air Force plans to operate a total of 120 Gripen fighter jets, mixing older C/D models with new E variants, and aims to increase defense spending by $2.9 billion in 2026, an 18% rise from the previous year. Sweden is exploring options for its future fighter program, including national development, joint ventures, and licensed production.

The Gripen E's upgraded electronic-warfare capabilities are a priority, enhancing operational effectiveness against threats, especially from Russia. Sweden aims to reach 3.5% of GDP for defense spending by 2030 and has conducted NATO operations in Poland and plans to deploy in Latvia. Discussions are ongoing regarding potential cooperation with Canada on fighter procurement and shared operational interests.
