Sweden's Data Center Boom: Investment and Infrastructure Challenges
Sweden is experiencing rapid data center expansions, particularly in Mälardalen, with significant implications for the electricity grid. In 2025, Svenska kraftnät received applications for 9,000 MW of capacity, with data centers accounting for over 50%, highlighting urgent infrastructure needs.

In 2025, Svenska kraftnät processed requests totaling approximately 9,000 MW, with data centers contributing over half of this volume. Significant investments are being made, including Microsoft’s 33.7 billion SEK allocation for expanding facilities in Gävle, Sandviken, and Staffanstorp, and Brookfield’s planned AI data center in Strängnäs, which could represent Sweden's largest foreign direct investment.
However, infrastructure challenges persist; Microsoft's project in Sandviken was paused due to insufficient grid capacity. Svenska kraftnät's investment rose nearly 300% to around 10 billion SEK in 2025, with a planned 70 billion SEK from 2027 to 2029 to address these issues. Current discussions emphasize the need for a national plan for data centers, especially as half of new transmission requests are from server facilities, linking infrastructure and digitalization policies.
