DEFENSE

TPP Chair Huang Kuo-chang led a delegation to meet with US National Security Council officials and the American Institute in Taiwan, focusing on Taiwan's defense budget and US tariffs. The delegation, including incoming TPP Legislator Wang An-hsiang, met on Monday and will return to Taiwan on Wednesday for a press conference.

Taiwan plans to spend NT$1.25 trillion on defense from 2023 to 2033. Meanwhile, opposition parties blocked the special defense budget in the Legislative Yuan. Discussions also included a potential trade deal to reduce tariffs on Taiwanese exports from 20% to 15%. In parallel, President Lai Ching-te thanked Canada for opposing China's military drills around Taiwan and highlighted Taiwan's defense budget increase, aiming for 5% of GDP by 2030, as part of strengthening international support.
