Taiwan Proposes NT$1.25 Trillion Defense Budget Amid Security Concerns
Taiwan seeks swift approval of a NT$1.25 trillion defense budget to enhance military readiness. This funding aims to acquire advanced weapon systems and bolster defense capabilities amid rising regional tensions.

Taiwan's proposed defense budget of NT$1.25 trillion (US$39.6 billion) is currently under legislative review, having been submitted last November. This budget will fund U.S.-approved weapon systems for Taiwan, set for sale in December 2025, and support local manufacturing initiatives.
President William Lai emphasized the necessity of this budget for acquiring precision weapons, insisting that it should be approved without cuts. The Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) and Taiwan People's Party have introduced alternative budget versions, citing disagreements on costs and scope.
Lai asserted that the funding is crucial for safeguarding democracy and enhancing military readiness against modern threats. The approval of this budget is likely to send a strong message of defense commitment internationally.
