Taiwan Urged to Increase Defense Spending on Drones Amid Growing Tensions
Taiwan's defense strategy should prioritize investment in drones and unmanned systems, according to Raymond Greene, director of the American Institute in Taiwan. This shift aims to enhance deterrence against China amid ongoing military pressures and a proposed $40 billion defense spending package.

The American Institute in Taiwan's director, Raymond Greene, emphasized the need for Taiwan to enhance its defense expenditures by investing in drones and unmanned systems to bolster deterrence against China. Taiwan's legislature recently approved only two-thirds of the requested $40 billion for defense, which includes funding for local drone and missile programs.
Greene pointed out that recent conflicts have highlighted the strategic advantages drones offer smaller militaries. He reiterated that peace in the Taiwan Strait is crucial for regional and global economic stability. The U.S. continues to support Taiwan's defense initiatives under the Taiwan Relations Act, maintaining its commitment to assist in countering coercive actions from China.
