Tamil Nadu Plans First Floating Solar Plants at Seven Reservoirs
Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL) aims to implement floating solar photovoltaic plants with a total capacity of 100 MW across seven reservoirs. This initiative supports the state's goal to enhance renewable energy capacity and efficiently use water resources for power generation.

Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL) is set to establish floating solar photovoltaic plants at Mettur, Bhavanisagar, Vaigai, Red Hills, Sathanoor reservoirs, and Avalanche. These pilot projects will have a combined capacity of 100 MW, as part of a larger potential identified by the union government, which estimates floating solar capacity in Tamil Nadu at 3,000 MW across 57 reservoirs.
TNGECL has requested permission from the Water Resources Department and is conducting feasibility studies with a private firm to assess costs and site suitability. The implementation will commence following necessary approvals and is expected to involve around 20% higher investment compared to traditional solar installations, indicating potential budgetary impacts for future projects.
