TANESCO Completes 50 MW Solar Plant in Shinyanga as Part of 150 MW Kishapu Project
Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO) has commissioned a 50 MW solar photovoltaic plant in Shinyanga, marking a key step in diversifying Tanzania's energy mix. The project, part of the 150 MW Kishapu Solar Power Project, was funded with TZS 118.6bn (approx. US$46.3m) from Agence Française de Développement and the European Union. This solar installation supports enhanced grid stability and energy security, particularly during dry seasons.

Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO) has launched a 50 MW solar photovoltaic plant in Kishapu District, Shinyanga Region, as part of the 150 MW Kishapu Solar Power Project. The facility, the largest solar PV plant in Tanzania, was constructed at a cost of TZS 118.6bn (approx.
US$46.3m), financed through Agence Française de Développement and the European Union. This project is a strategic move to diversify Tanzania's energy mix, traditionally reliant on hydropower and natural gas, enhancing grid stability and national energy security. Future plans include Phase Two, which aims to add an additional 100 MW to the project.
