Tata Steel IJmuiden and Ecocem Establish MoU for Low-Carbon Cement Solutions
Tata Steel IJmuiden and Ecocem have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop next-generation steelmaking slags for low-carbon cement applications in Europe. This collaboration aims to reduce CO emissions in the cement industry by replacing clinker with alternative materials derived from steel production.
Tata Steel IJmuiden (TSIJ) and Ecocem Materials Ltd have formalized their partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding focused on utilizing basic oxygen furnace (BOF) and electric arc furnace (EAF) slags in low-carbon cement, mortar, and concrete. The initiative builds on their existing research and commercial engagement regarding granulated blast-furnace slag (gbs).
The project aims to create cementitious binders from these industrial by-products, promoting circular economy practices. By leveraging these materials, the collaboration seeks to enhance the market for low-carbon concrete, thus supporting the decarbonization of construction materials. This partnership highlights the need for innovative solutions to reduce emissions in both the steel and cement sectors.
