Tech Leaders Call for Mandatory Screening of Synthetic Nucleic Acids to Congress
Sam Altman and Dario Amodei, alongside other AI leaders, urge the US Congress to mandate screening for synthetic nucleic acids to mitigate biosecurity risks. This joint initiative highlights a critical moment in AI and biotechnology regulation as the rapid advancement of AI technologies poses increasing threats of misuse in biological weapon development.

A coalition of AI executives, including Sam Altman (OpenAI), Dario Amodei (Anthropic), Demis Hassabis (Google AI), and Mustafa Suleyman (Microsoft AI), has issued a letter to the US Congress advocating for mandatory screening of synthetic nucleic acid orders. They emphasize the need for regulations to prevent bad actors from exploiting advancements in AI for biological weapons development, highlighting the vulnerability of the biotechnology supply chain.
The letter outlines that current AI systems can outperform experts in technical laboratory procedures, intensifying biosecurity concerns. They recommend that screening and recordkeeping measures be implemented to verify customer legitimacy and sequence data for biosecurity investigations. The urgency for legislative action is stressed, as a consistent national standard is deemed essential amidst rapidly evolving technologies.
