Tees Valley Mayor Secures Cabinet Support for Single Sex Space Compliance Rule
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen has obtained cabinet approval for a mandate requiring compliance with single sex space regulations by organizations under contract with the Tees Valley Combined Authority. This follows legal guidance from the Supreme Court and an employment tribunal ruling pertaining to the treatment of female nurses by a NHS trust.

The Tees Valley Combined Authority (TVCA) cabinet has unanimously approved a new requirement that organizations contracting with the authority must adhere to legal guidelines regarding single sex spaces. This mandate is a response to the Supreme Court's ruling from April 2025 and a related tribunal decision involving the County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust, which incurred over £600,000 in legal expenses for its defense.
The new clause aims to address public concerns regarding the rights of women to access single sex spaces and will apply to all existing and future contracts. Non-compliance will be classified as a breach of contract, reinforcing accountability for public funds.
