Tennessee's OpenAg Initiative Aims to Democratize Agricultural AI for Global Farmers
Jason Fisher founded the Open Agriculture (OpenAg) initiative to create an open-source agricultural AI ecosystem. The initiative, based at the University of Memphis Research Park, collaborates with global universities to ensure farmers have access to agricultural intelligence without corporate control. In spring 2025, a white paper proposed a framework for equitable agricultural practices. The initiative targets building specialized agricultural language models by 2026, making AI tools accessible for crop management and farm productivity worldwide.

Jason Fisher established the Open Agriculture (OpenAg) initiative to democratize agricultural AI and prevent corporate control over agricultural intelligence. Based at the Institute of Applied Artificial Intelligence and Robotics at the University of Memphis, OpenAg collaborates with global universities to convert fragmented agricultural data into usable information for farmers and policymakers.
A white paper released in spring 2025 outlined a framework for equitable AI use in agriculture. By 2026, the initiative plans to develop small agricultural language models that provide localized intelligence, assisting farmers in crop management and productivity. Fisher aims to create a global agricultural AI ecosystem with broad support from governments and universities.
