Testing Phase Begins for Paris' MI20 Double-Deck Trains Amid Delays
The first MI20 train for Paris' RER Line B has been unveiled, marking the start of testing for a fleet renewal program delayed until 2028. The €5bn investment aims to increase capacity by 35% on one of Europe's busiest commuter lines, essential for meeting growing passenger demand.
The first MI20 double-deck train for Paris' RER B line has been unveiled by Alstom, initiating the testing phase of a fleet renewal program that has faced significant delays. Île-de-France Mobilités is investing approximately €5bn into the RER B project, with about half allocated to the MI20 fleet, which will replace older rolling stock on a line serving nearly one million passengers daily. Despite the unveiling, the trains are not expected to enter service until late 2028, three years later than initially planned, due to production issues involving Alstom and CAF.
A new command center and NExTEO train automation technology are also part of the investment plan. The MI20's compatibility with NExTEO is critical; delays could hinder the overall modernization of the line. The program's complexity and the need for tight coordination between manufacturers pose ongoing risks to the timeline.
