Texas Coastal Project Contracts Announced for $34 Billion Storm Surge Protection System

DEFENSE

The Texas Coastal Project has announced its first contracts, marking progress in the $34 billion initiative to protect the Texas coast from storm surge flooding. The project, proposed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Texas General Land Office, aims to safeguard Galveston Island, Galveston Bay, and the Houston Ship Channel.

It consists of multiple defenses, including the Galveston Bay Storm Surge Barrier System, known as 'The Ike Dike.' The federal government is expected to cover about 65% of costs, with initial funding of $5 million from Congress and $1 billion from Texas. The project will ultimately protect over six million residents and assets worth $800 billion.
