Thai Military Revamps 2027 Arms Plan with Expanded Drone Capabilities Amid Border Tensions
The Thai military is revamping its 2027 arms plan to enhance drone capabilities amid rising border tensions, particularly with Cambodia. This initiative includes a four-phase development framework, with a UAS warfare center set to become operational from October 2025, and improvements across the Army, Navy, and Air Force to integrate unmanned systems into national defense. Additionally, the National Security Council is establishing a committee to manage unmanned aircraft operations in the country.

The Thai military is enhancing its 2027 arms plan, focusing on expanding drone capabilities for national defense and military operations. The Army has implemented a four-phase development framework and is currently in the medium phase, which involves updating military doctrine and establishing task forces for operational trials.
In response to the Thai-Cambodian border conflict, a UAS warfare center and battalion will be operational from October 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026. The Navy is enhancing UAS and C-UAS capabilities and utilizes three types of drones for reconnaissance.
The Air Force has a 25-year UAS development plan from 2023 to 2047, integrating counter-drone systems within an air defense framework. The National Security Council is addressing unmanned aircraft management in two phases, with a national committee to be established within one month. The Royal Thai Police is also expanding UAS capabilities for various security missions.
