Thailand and Vietnam Implement Power Sector Reforms for Renewable Energy Transition

Thailand and Vietnam are reforming their power sectors to reduce fossil fuel dependence and meet climate goals. Vietnam's Power Development Plan VIII aims for net-zero emissions by 2050, introducing Direct Power Purchase Agreements allowing renewable producers to sell directly to corporate customers.

An updated Electricity Law to be effective in early 2025 addresses challenges in offshore wind and LNG projects. Thailand's Power Development Plan focuses on integrating renewables and enabling third-party access to transmission networks. Both countries are enhancing energy security and promoting private investment in a shift toward cleaner energy, despite facing infrastructure upgrade challenges.
