Thailand's Deep South Insurgency Marks 22 Years with 10,116 Attacks and 5,999 Deaths
Thailand's deep South insurgency has reached its 22nd anniversary, starting from January 4, following the theft of 413 firearms from an army camp in Narathiwat. Since its resurgence, there have been 10,116 recorded attacks, resulting in 5,999 deaths.
Government compensation over the past 21 years totaled THB4.69 billion (US$149.3 million), with THB3.46 billion allocated for physical harm and THB1.23 billion for property damage. In 2025, 150 security incidents were certified, causing 48 deaths and 384 injuries, marking a decrease in property compensation to THB2.80 million, the lowest recorded.
The Internal Security Operations Command reported bombings and ambushes as predominant tactics, with Narathiwat experiencing the highest number of incidents. Throughout the last three months, there were 34 casualties across the region.
