Thales Proposes Redevelopment of Missile Testing Facility in Co Down
Thales has submitted planning applications for a £100 million redevelopment of its testing site in rural Co Down, aiming to expand its workforce from 700 to 900. This initiative follows a substantial UK Government contract for 5,000 missiles valued at up to £1.6 billion, indicating strategic growth in defense manufacturing.

Thales has initiated plans to redevelop its testing facility in Teconnaught, rural Co Down, including three planning applications for new industrial and storage units. The project, requiring £100 million in investment, aims to increase staff from 700 to 900 as the company ramps up production following a significant UK Government order for 5,000 air defense missiles for Ukraine.
The site, formerly a Royal Navy armament depot and later managed by Shorts Missile Systems, has been under Thales' control since 2000. The proposed development features essential infrastructure like a pump house and generator, which could enhance operational capabilities. The expansion could bolster the UK’s defense manufacturing sector amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
