Train Derailment in Oaxaca, Mexico Leaves 13 Dead and 98 Injured
A train derailment in Asunción Ixtaltepec, Oaxaca, Mexico, resulted in at least 13 fatalities and 98 injuries on Sunday. The Interoceanic Train, which links the Pacific and Gulf coasts, had 250 passengers on board at the time of the incident.
According to the Mexican Navy, 36 individuals required hospitalization, while the remaining injured sustained minor injuries. Emergency response teams, including hundreds of naval personnel and rescue vehicles, were dispatched to the scene.
An investigation has been initiated by Mexico's Attorney General, Ernestina Godoy, to ascertain the cause of the derailment. President Claudia Sheinbaum has directed the Secretary of the Navy and the Undersecretary for Human Rights to visit the site and support the affected families. The train's main line, which commenced operations in 2023, was part of a program aimed at enhancing economic development in southern Mexico.
