Transelectrica Advocates for High-Level Office to Boost Data Center Investments in Romania
Transelectrica's Virgiliu Ivan calls for a high-level office to expedite approvals for data center investments in Romania. Current capacity is under 100 MW, lagging behind regional peers. Discussions in 2024 involved potential data centers from Google and Microsoft, particularly near Bucharest-Ilfov and Cluj, but progress has stalled despite a July 2024 memorandum with Google.

Virgiliu Ivan of Transelectrica's National Dispatch Center has proposed establishing a high-level office to accelerate approvals for large data center investments in Romania. Currently, the country has less than 100 MW of data center capacity, which is significantly lower than that of regional counterparts.
In 2024, potential data centers from Google and Microsoft were discussed, with locations around Bucharest-Ilfov and Cluj. However, despite a memorandum signed with Google in July 2024, no actions have been taken, highlighting the need for a more efficient governmental framework to enhance Romania's digital infrastructure.
