Transport for London to Power Underground with Solar Energy from SSE Energy Solutions
Transport for London (TfL) plans to power parts of the Underground using solar energy from new solar farms. The project, in collaboration with SSE Energy Solutions, aims to supply up to 65,000 MWh of renewable electricity annually, covering two-thirds of the Victoria line's consumption. This initiative marks a private-wire renewable energy scheme, contributing to TfL's goal of operating entirely on renewable electricity by 2030.

Transport for London (TfL) is set to power parts of the Underground with solar energy from new solar farms, potentially supplying 65,000 MWh annually. TfL currently consumes 1.6 TWh of electricity yearly.
The arrangement with SSE Energy Solutions will allow TfL to bypass the National Grid for direct electricity supply, reducing network pressure and securing fixed pricing. This initiative supports TfL's plan to achieve 100% renewable electricity by 2030 and includes the development of solar installations near transport networks. TfL's energy strategy anticipates that up to 70% of its demand will be met through long-term power purchase agreements.
