Tree Removal at Alexandra Cemetery Due to Vandalism
A robinia tree at Alexandra Cemetery was removed following vandalism, incurring estimated costs of $1,000 to $2,000 for the council. The incident, reported to police, highlights concerns over public safety and respect for cemetery grounds.

The Central Otago District Council (CODC) removed a robinia tree from Alexandra Cemetery after it was vandalized on a Friday night, posing a safety risk. The estimated cost for the removal, cleanup, and replanting is between $1,000 and $2,000.
Damage to speed signs near the cemetery was also reported, but any connection to the tree vandalism is unclear. CODC parks and recreation manager, Gordon Bailey, stated the timber would be donated to the Salvation Army for firewood. The CODC urges residents to respect cemetery areas, emphasizing that concerns about trees should be reported rather than addressed by individuals.
