Trump Allocates $700 Million for Coal Industry Support and Export Terminal Development
President Trump plans to announce nearly $700 million in federal funding aimed at revitalizing the coal sector and enhancing coal exports. This initiative leverages the Defense Production Act to address energy security concerns amid declining coal usage in the U.S.

The Trump administration intends to support the coal industry with $700 million in funding, utilizing Cold War-era authorities under the Defense Production Act. This package includes $425 million for upgrades to 13 coal-fired power plants, $185 million in grants for new facilities in Alaska and West Virginia, and $75 million for a coal export terminal in Northern California.
Coal's share of U.S. electricity generation has fallen to approximately 16%, down from over 50% in previous decades, largely due to competition from natural gas and renewable energy. The administration's push for coal funding faces criticism from environmental groups, which argue it may raise consumer costs and prolong reliance on high-emission sources.
