Trump Considers Troop Reduction in Germany Amid Tensions with Chancellor Merz
President Trump announced a review of the U.S. military presence in Germany, potentially reducing troop levels. This comes amid criticism from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz regarding U.S. strategy in Iran, highlighting ongoing tensions within NATO over defense commitments.

The U.S. is evaluating a possible reduction of troops in Germany, as President Trump indicated on Truth Social. As of December 2025, over 68,000 U.S. personnel were stationed in Europe, with approximately 36,400 in Germany, a significant decrease from 250,000 in 1985.
The discussions follow a public disagreement between Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz about the U.S. military's engagement in Iran. While Merz criticized U.S. strategy, asserting that it has faced humiliation, he later stated that his relationship with Trump remains constructive. A troop reduction could impact transatlantic security and U.S.-European relations, particularly as NATO allies face pressure to increase defense spending.
