Turkey Expands Defense Exports Amid Shifting Global Alliances
Turkey's defense exports have surged to $10 billion, tripling since 2021, as it targets enhanced arms sales in Western markets. The country's military industry is evolving rapidly, positioning Turkey as a key player in the global defense landscape amidst geopolitical shifts and increasing European military spending.

Turkey's defense exports reached $10 billion in 2022, tripling since 2021, driven by strong state support and the flexibility of its defense firms. Exports to Europe and the U.S. alone increased nearly fourfold to $5.6 billion during this time.
Notable companies in Turkey's defense sector include Baykar and Turkish Aerospace Industries, which have benefited from the ability to quickly adapt products to meet buyer needs. Turkey aims to double its defense exports within two years, crucial for addressing national debt and enhancing military capabilities.
The changing geopolitical landscape, particularly following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, has prompted NATO allies to view Turkey as both a military partner and an industrial ally. However, Turkey faces challenges including exclusion from the EU's SAFE program and political tensions affecting cooperation. Despite these hurdles, engagement with countries such as Poland and Spain indicates potential for deeper defense collaboration if political barriers can be navigated.
