Turkey Shifts Libya Policy, Engaging with Haftar's LNA Amid Civil Conflict

DEFENSE

Turkey is shifting its Libya policy from support for the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity (GNU) to engagement with the Libyan National Army (LNA), led by Khalifa Haftar. This change aims to expand Turkey's influence in Libya and gain access to oil fields while addressing maritime disputes.

The LNA may benefit from defense agreements with Turkey, including military training and arms procurement. Additionally, Turkey is looking to deepen energy ties with the LNA, potentially signing agreements for gas exploration that would boost Haftar's legitimacy. This rapprochement may create tensions with Egypt over maritime claims, enabling Haftar to play both Turkey and Egypt against each other to strengthen his position.
