UAE Reassesses Energy Strategy Amid Qatar Relations Strain
The UAE aims to reduce its 85% electricity dependence on natural gas, primarily from Qatar, in response to diplomatic tensions. This situation may drive regulatory reforms to boost local gas production and attract foreign investment.

The UAE currently relies on natural gas for over 85% of its electricity, largely sourced from Qatar through the Dolphin pipeline. In light of a diplomatic crisis with Qatar, the UAE is reconsidering its dependence on these imports and is exploring the development of its own gas reserves.
Projections suggest that by 2030, the UAE will still be 50-60% reliant on natural gas, despite ongoing investments in alternative energy sources like nuclear and solar. Existing challenges include sour gas production and strict domestic pricing regulations, which hinder local gas development. The current crisis may lead to regulatory changes aimed at increasing foreign investment and enhancing competitiveness within the UAE gas sector.
