Uganda Implements Strict Fishing Guidelines: Licensing for Fishermen and Boats
New regulations in Uganda limit each landing site to 100 licensed fishermen and 30 boats to enhance sustainable fishing. The UPDF will oversee these changes to curb illegal fishing practices.

The Ugandan government has introduced new fishing regulations that restrict operations at each landing site to 100 licensed fishermen and 30 boats. Lt. Gen.
Okiding, Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, stated that fish mongers must also obtain licenses to conduct business legally, with the army resuming oversight of fishing activities to promote sustainability. Illegal fishing practices will be met with prosecution, including potential jail time of up to eight months for offenders.
Concerns have been raised about the cost of licensing and required gear, which may drive some fishermen to illegal methods, posing risks of confrontation with military personnel. Fishermen are encouraged to seek alternative livelihoods through government programs.
