UK Defense Halts Ajax Program Amid Safety Concerns and Reviews Future of Typhoon Fleet
The UK Army's Ajax armored vehicle program faces uncertainty after its use was paused due to safety concerns affecting personnel. The initial operating capability was declared in November 2022, despite issues with excessive noise and vibrations.
Following reports of symptoms among 35 service members, Minister for Defence Readiness Luke Pollard ordered an indefinite halt to training. A review revealed that concerns had not been escalated appropriately, leading to the removal of the program's Senior Responsible Owner.
Pollard mentioned that the Ministry of Defence is collaborating with General Dynamics to address Ajax's issues, with potential cancellation looming. Meanwhile, the UK is investing £650 million to upgrade the RAF's Typhoon jets, including fitting advanced radar systems and weapon support. Despite recent orders for Typhoons by Turkey and Germany, the UK government opted for additional F-35 fighters, raising questions about its procurement strategy.
