UK Defense Secretary Admits Errors in Handling Afghan Data Breach Incident
Former UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace acknowledged mistakes in handling a data breach that compromised the contact details of thousands of Afghans who assisted British forces. He criticized the negligence behind the incident, which was revealed after a High Court judge lifted a superinjunction in July 2024, and emphasized the importance of transparency in defense matters to enhance public understanding and support for military spending.

Former UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace stated he would not have proposed a secret gagging order regarding a data breach that endangered thousands of Afghans. In mid-2023, the Ministry of Defence discovered a leak of sensitive contact details due to an official's error.
Thousands of Afghans who assisted British forces were relocated to the UK, and the breach was disclosed following a High Court judge's lifting of a superinjunction in July 2024. Wallace criticized the negligence behind the breach and noted that new procedures had been implemented after a previous incident. He emphasized the need for transparency and public awareness regarding defense threats, stating that military spending is not prioritized by voters due to a lack of understanding of these threats.
