UK Military Enhances Drone Defense Powers Amid Rise in Incidents Near Bases
UK troops will have the authority to shoot down drones near military bases due to a rise in incidents, which doubled to 266 in 2025 from 126 in 2024. This response follows concerns over sightings of swarms of drones at US bases in Suffolk, Norfolk, and Gloucestershire, suspected to be linked to foreign states, including potential Kremlin operations.
The Armed Forces Bill, introduced in January 2025, grants enhanced powers for military personnel to neutralize threatening drones and increases investment in counter-drone technology, totaling over £200 million for 2026. The UK government is also tightening drone regulations, mandating licenses for drones over 100g.
European allies are discussing 'drone walls' to enhance regional security, with the first expected by 2027. Enhanced security measures, including restricted airspace and CCTV, are being implemented at 40 military sites.
