Russia's investment in its Northern Fleet remains strong despite ongoing conflict in Ukraine, according to General Gwyn Jenkins, First Sea Lord of the Royal Navy. Speaking at a naval conference in Paris, Jenkins highlighted the continued allocation of resources to Russia's subsurface capabilities, despite the costs incurred from the invasion of Ukraine.
He noted that Russia's military activities are challenging Western powers' capabilities, particularly in terms of developing new vessels. Vice-Admiral Harold Liebregs of the Royal Netherlands Navy stated that Russia is increasingly active in the North Sea, potentially preparing for further actions, including the use of poorly maintained ships that support the Russian war economy. Both commanders emphasized the need for Western allies to address these challenges to maintain strategic stability.
