UK Nuclear Sector Urged to Embrace Modular Manufacturing for Clean Energy Goals
The UK government has reinforced its commitment to nuclear power with new policies, including funding for new power stations and small modular reactors (SMRs). However, to meet its 2030 clean energy target, the nuclear sector must accelerate its development.
An independent regulatory taskforce, established by Keir Starmer, published the Nuclear Regulatory Review 2025, identifying barriers such as high costs and regulatory complexities that hinder innovation. The report advocates for modern manufacturing techniques, especially modularisation, to enhance efficiency and reduce costs.
Modular approaches can improve flexibility in plant capacity and streamline decommissioning processes. The report also emphasizes the need for off-site construction for ancillary buildings to support workforce accommodation. Utilizing modular solutions can lower carbon emissions and contribute to a circular economy, ultimately aiding the UK in achieving its clean power ambitions.
