UK Peak Cluster CCS Project Advances to Assess Phase
The Morecambe Net Zero (MNZ) Peak Cluster project aims to cut cement and lime emissions by 40% in the UK. It has entered the 'Assess Phase' for its carbon storage license, targeting a capacity to store three million tonnes of CO2 annually.

The MNZ Peak Cluster project has progressed to the 'Assess Phase' for its carbon storage license, working toward a permit to store CO2 emissions from four cement and lime facilities in the depleted Morecambe fields. This initiative aims to transport three million tonnes of CO2 per year and potentially become the largest offshore carbon storage site in the UK.
The Morecambe fields, which have provided natural gas for over 40 years, are expected to cease production by 2030. The cement and lime sectors contribute about 8% of global CO2 emissions, primarily from chemical processes. Critics highlight challenges related to cost and long-term monitoring of carbon storage, which could prolong the operation of high-emission industries.
