UK Police to Expand Facial Recognition Technology Using Corsight AI Linked to Israel's Gaza Operations
The UK will expand its use of facial recognition technology, relying on software from Israeli firm Corsight AI, used in Gaza by the Israeli army. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced plans to increase the number of live facial recognition vans from 10 to over 50, aimed at identifying individuals on police watchlists.
This rollout, costing £20 million ($27.6 million), has raised civil liberties concerns. Corsight AI, subcontracted by UK company Digital Barriers, was selected after a trial in Essex. Critics highlight the software's prior use in Gaza, where it faced scrutiny for inaccuracies and wrongful detentions.
The UK government has faced backlash for partnering with a firm linked to Israel's surveillance efforts amid ongoing humanitarian concerns in Gaza. Amnesty International criticized the UK for failing to uphold its obligations regarding genocide prevention.
