UK Royal Navy Invests £316 Million in DragonFire Lasers for Type 45 Destroyers to Enhance Drone Defense
The UK Royal Navy has secured a £316 million ($414 million) contract to equip its Type 45 destroyers with the DragonFire laser weapon system. This initiative aims to strengthen NATO's drone defense capabilities and introduces Europe’s first high-powered laser defense system.
Drones have increasingly posed significant challenges to military forces, especially highlighted by their use in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, where they have caused up to 80% of casualties by early 2025. The U.K. experienced the challenges of drone threats in April 2024 when HMS Diamond successfully repelled Houthi-controlled drone swarms in the Red Sea, revealing the inadequacies of current defense systems. The investment in laser technology is part of a broader strategy to develop effective countermeasures against evolving drone technologies.
