UK Team Develops CosmoCube Satellite to Explore Early Universe Signals
The UK-led CosmoCube mission aims to launch a satellite to the moon's far side to detect the 21cm line radio frequency signal from hydrogen in the early universe. With a budget of approximately £50 million, the two-year mission is expected to launch within five years, offering insights into cosmic origins and dark matter.

The CosmoCube mission plans to deploy a suitcase-sized satellite to the moon's far side to detect a faint 21cm line radio signal emitted by hydrogen atoms over 13.5 billion years ago. This mission, funded by the UK Space Agency and estimated to cost just under £50 million, is anticipated to launch in about five years, operating for two years and collecting around 1,000 hours of observations.
By avoiding Earth-based interference, CosmoCube aims to provide a clearer understanding of the early universe, particularly during the cosmic dark ages. However, competition from other lunar missions could introduce new radio noise, potentially complicating data collection.
