UKAEA and Partners Develop AI Model GyroSwin for Rapid Plasma Turbulence Simulation in Fusion Energy

A team from the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), Johannes Kepler University Linz, and Emmi AI has developed GyroSwin, an AI model that generates five-dimensional (5D) plasma turbulence simulations up to 1,000 times faster and at lower costs than traditional methods. This advancement is crucial for designing future fusion power plants, as managing plasma turbulence is a significant challenge in achieving fusion energy.

GyroSwin utilizes AI to learn the dynamics of 5D simulations, drastically reducing computation times from hours or days to mere seconds, enabling quicker predictions essential for optimizing fusion machine designs. The project received partial funding from the UK Government's Fusion Futures Programme, aimed at advancing fusion technology and international collaboration.
