Ukraine Grants Combatant Status to Foreign Nationals Serving in Defence Forces
Ukraine has established that foreign nationals and stateless persons serving alongside Ukrainians in the Defence Forces are entitled to the same recognition and rights as Ukrainian citizens regarding Combatant Status. This status is available to those officially contracted for military service or who have engaged in combat tasks in operational areas or occupied territories vital for Ukraine's defense.
The process for obtaining Combatant Status is identical for foreign service members and Ukrainian citizens, requiring documentation of combat task performance. There are two pathways to obtain the status: automatic entry into the Unified State Register of War Veterans within five days of a combat mission, or through submission to the Interagency Commission for a review process lasting up to 30 days. Combatant Status facilitates the process for obtaining immigration permits or Ukrainian citizenship post-service.
