Ukraine Intercepts Kh-32 Missiles Amidst Increased Russian Attacks
On January 24, Ukraine's Air Force successfully intercepted nine Kh-32 missiles amid escalating Russian attacks. The Kh-32, a modernized version of the Soviet-era Kh-22, is known for its high speed and significant range, posing challenges for Ukrainian air defenses, which rely on advanced systems like the U.S.-supplied Patriot. Despite its capabilities, logistical constraints limit Russia's deployment of the missile, which has been linked to serious civilian casualties in past strikes.

On January 24, Ukraine's Air Force intercepted nine Kh-32 missiles, which Russia has used sparingly but effectively in attacks. The Kh-32, a modernization of the Soviet-era Kh-22 missile, is known for its high speed, with a range of up to 1,000 kilometers and speeds between Mach 4 to Mach 5.
It poses significant challenges for Ukrainian air defenses, with only advanced systems like the U.S.-supplied Patriot and potentially the forthcoming SAMP-T NG capable of countering it. Historically, the Kh-32 has been linked to serious civilian casualties, including a deadly strike on a shopping mall in June 2022.
Despite its formidable profile, the missile's size and logistical demands limit Russia's operational deployment, as a Tu-22M3 bomber can only carry one or two. The Kh-32's design reflects its origins as a weapon for large targets rather than precision strikes, increasing risks to civilians in urban areas.
