Ukraine Launches New Gas Import Routes; No Capacity Booked in Initial Auctions

NATURAL GAS

Ukraine has introduced two new gas import routes, Route 2 and Route 3, under the Vertical Corridor initiative involving Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria, and Greece. The first auctions for these routes took place on December 22, 2025, but no bookings were made, attributed to limited preparation time following the recent approval of capacity reservation products.

Route 2 is designed for transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Alexandroupolis terminal in Greece to Ukraine, passing through Bulgaria, Romania, and Moldova. Route 3 aims to import Azerbaijani gas into Ukraine, starting at the interconnection of the Greece-Bulgaria interconnector and the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline, following a similar path to Route 2. The auction for the existing Route 1, which transports gas from the Revythoussa LNG terminal in Greece to Ukraine, also saw no reservations despite a capacity offering of 4.89 million cubic meters for January.
