Ukraine's UAV Procurement Surge: From 219 Million UAH in 2022 to 15.4 Billion UAH in 2024
Ukraine's drone procurement has rapidly escalated, with expenditures rising from 219 million UAH in 2022 to 15.4 billion UAH in 2024. The drone industry has established itself as a key segment of Ukraine's defense sector, enabling production capabilities of up to 10 million UAVs annually by 2025.
However, challenges arose in securing contracts, leading to a shift from hypergrowth to a need for sustainable market models. The government initiated an experimental procurement project in March 2023 to streamline UAV acquisitions, and by December 2024, a permanent procurement procedure was established.
Decentralization of procurement has enhanced competition and reduced bureaucracy. International support has increased, with the EU opening funding options for dual-use technologies, including advanced UAVs. The 2026 production goal is set at 20 million drones, contingent on adequate funding and sustainable contracts.
