Ukrainian Forces Utilize US Tempest System to Intercept 21 Russian Drones

DEFENSE

Ukrainian forces have intercepted at least 21 Russian Shahed-type drones using the Tempest short-range air defense system. A video from the Ukrainian Air Force's Central Command, released on January 13, 2026, indicates that the American-made system was operational in Ukraine several months prior to its public unveiling in October 2025 at the AUSA defense exhibition.

The footage suggests the system was deployed during nighttime attacks in eastern Ukraine, showcasing its mobility and quick deployment capabilities, which have been praised by Ukrainian personnel. Developed by US contractor V2X, Tempest was designed for mobile airspace protection based on insights from the ongoing conflict.
