Ukrainian Military Integrates Ground Robots for Logistics and Combat Operations Amid Infantry Shortages
The Ukrainian military is increasingly using unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) for logistics and combat to mitigate the challenges posed by Russian FPV drones. Established logistics systems utilizing UGVs aim to replace traditional infantry roles, particularly machine gunners and grenade launcher crews, driven by a critical shortage of personnel.
By 2025, Ukraine procured nearly 15,000 UGVs, enhancing logistics and enabling tactical refinements. UGVs are now performing various roles, including planting landmines and reconnaissance, with a focus on replacing riflemen in high-risk scenarios.
The most common armament includes large-caliber machine guns and grenade launchers, with systems being developed to improve targeting and operational efficiency. UGVs can provide fire support while keeping human soldiers safe, particularly in defensive operations. Ongoing development aims to enhance UGV capabilities with advanced armaments and AI technologies for improved autonomy.
